Parent involvement in a child’s education is plays a vital role in their future success. As an educator, I was thrilled to see Target supporting parent involvement through their development of the “Ready. Sit. Read!” Book Club. Parents, kids, friends, and neighbors read the same book and then come together to talk about it and have some fun. The idea for the program was modeled after the adult book clubs. Target allows families to register their Book Club online. Families can create a club name and club logo. Book Club members can print out bookmarks and door hangers on the website as well. The “Ready. Sit. Read!” Book Club makes it easy for families to bring the books they have read to life through games, crafts, and snacks. All can be inspired by the book’s subject or characters. Families are encouraged to plan club meetings to come together and talk about the book they have just read and have some fun. I was very impressed with the website because it provided links for parents that included a multitude of resources. These resources included proven tips to encourage their child to read. It also included ideas on reading together with your child. One of the links gave insightful information on how to make the most of your library time and create your own book sanctuary at home. The resource list also included ideas on how to discover 100 ways a day to practice writing with your child through fun games. My favorite link was “artful writing” in which every picture tells a story---especially when it comes to your child’s own words. I was very impressed with the “Ready. Sit. Read!” Book Club that Target has developed to increase parent involvement and make reading a part of your family’s everyday life.
